There's something quietly satisfying about turning a bowl. You start with a rough blank of timber and, through patience and a bit of skill, you reveal something both beautiful and useful. It's one of woodturning's most rewarding projects, and one of the most popular requests I get from students at The Woodturning School.

So I put together this three-part video series to walk you through the entire process, from an 8x2 inch beech blank to a finished piece you'll be proud to put on the table.

Here's how we'll work through it:

Part One covers turning the outside profile and creating a recess for chuck mounting. Getting this foundation right makes everything else easier.

Part Two tackles the inside of the bowl. This is where most beginners feel unsure, so I've included on-screen graphics showing exactly where your tool should be positioned through each cut. Sometimes seeing the angle makes all the difference.

Part Three is all about sanding and finishing. Because honestly, this is where a good piece becomes a great one.

These are the same techniques I teach here at the school in Hampshire. They're beginner-friendly, but they'll serve you well no matter how far you take your turning.
