Colwin Way: Viking Sunset Bowl
A Legacy in Your Hands
£299 per person | Friday and Saturday | Maximum 5 students
Nick Agar's Viking Sunset Bowl is one of the most recognisable pieces in contemporary woodturning. Part sculpture, part illusion — a simple bowl that looks forged in pewter and kissed by fire.
Colwin learned the techniques for this piece directly from Nick, and is honoured to be able to teach them with the blessing of Nick’s family. Over two days, you'll learn the turning, the texturing, the airbrushed colour, and the gilding that makes the rim glow.
Intermediate and advanced turners looking for something special. Those interested in surface enhancement and decorative techniques. Anyone who's seen the Viking Bowl and wondered how it's done. Some bowl turning experience required, but you don't need to be an expert.
Who is this Class for?
Your Tutor - Colwin Way RPT
Colwin's turning journey began in 1986 with a five-year production apprenticeship — the kind of grounding in craft that's increasingly rare. He learned to turn in many materials under proper guidance, day after day, until the skills became second nature. Based on Devon's Jurassic Coast, he now travels the world demonstrating and teaching, with appearances across the UK, Europe, and the USA. He was on the very first Norwegian woodturning cruise back in 2001.
Colwin brings his iconic two-day Viking Sunset Bowl class to The Woodturning School in 2026. It's a chance to learn Nick Agar's celebrated design from someone with nearly four decades at the lathe — and the relaxed, encouraging teaching style to match.
