Two Day Woodturning Beginners Class

Begin the day at the coffee shop at 9:00 am on Day One to meet your turning mates for the next two days and your tutor Martin. By 9:30, you’re in the workshop, surrounded by timber and tools, ready to begin. Over the next two days, you dive deep into woodturning for the first time, learning new skills, building confidence, and enjoying this hands-on experience under the expert guidance.

On Day One, you’ll start turning and shaping whilst learning how tools behave, how wood responds, and creating foundational pieces. Lunch is a pause to regroup and share discoveries, then it’s back to the lathe to finish the morning and start turning your bowl. You wrap up around 4:00 pm, with the evening ahead to ponder what’s next.

Day Two begins again at 9am at the workshop, ready to complete your bowl and take on a more daring lidded pot. By 12:00 your bowl is done, and your focus shifts to mastering techniques for the pot. Lunch is followed by the final push — refining, sanding, finishing. The day usually ends around 4:00 pm, but we’ll stretch it out if needed so everyone can complete their work before tidying up!

Over the two days you’ll:

  • Turn your first bowl, learning the tricks and tools that make it possible

  • Advance to making a lidded pot, pushing your skills further

  • Get hands-on instruction in tool use, sharpening, design ideas, safety, and finishing techniques

  • Benefit from a fully equipped workshop — all materials, machines, safety gear, and consumables provided

  • Work in a small group so Martin can give close personal guidance

  • Receive over an hour of follow-up videos so you can revisit what you’ve learned

By the end you’ll leave not just with super pieces you made yourself, but with new confidence, skills, and hopefully a hobby for life.

Refresher Videos

As you will be new to turning, there will be a lot of techniques and information learned on these two days. Unsurprisingly, you may forget some of what you have learned, so we have reinstated our special Refresher Videos for this class.

With over an hour of tooling videos, you can refresh your memory from home by watching them and copying the techniques demonstrated.
